All dispatch activities for the ComEd distribution system, which serves approximately 3.8 million customers across Northern Illinois, take place from the ComEd Operations Control Center Tour. The tour will detail the physical layout of the facility, including the emergency command center and dispatch "pods" as well as an explanation of the IT systems in use.

The demonstration center allows visitors to see in real time, with real equipment and real voltage, how smart grid technologies respond to grid issues and optimize reliability and resilience of power delivery systems. The demonstration center includes real, working S&C equipment and interactive smart grid exhibits that display S&C's solutions such as self-healing technology, energy storage integration solutions and communications systems. In addition to the smart grid demonstration, S&C has a live demonstration of a 150-kW energy storage system providing fast-response frequency regulation for the PJM market.

ComEd's smart substation program is modernizing ComEd substations by upgrading electro-mechanical protective relays to modern microprocessor-based devices. It's also replacing aging circuit breakers and switch gear, enhancing two-way communications between ComEd's control center and each substation, and installing technology to remotely monitor the health of ComEd’s assets, including its transformers and station batteries. This program provides for fault detection, remote asset monitoring, improved site security, and dynamic voltage regulation. Partial upgrades may be applied across the service territory. The Burr Ridge substation upgrades are currently in progress and expected to be completed in Q1 2016.

Exelon City Solar is the largest urban solar power plant in the United States. Its 32,292 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generate enough clean, reliable electricity to power up to 1,500 homes per year.

The mission of the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation is to pursue groundbreaking work in the generation, transmission, distribution, management and consumption of electricity. Galvin Center brings together universities, industry, government and non-profit research entities to plug into IIT's microgrid, research laboratories and Technology Park, creating a hub – or sandbox – for new innovations in advanced grid technology. The Galvin Center's premier project is the development of the nation's first Perfect Power microgrid at IIT.

The Silver Spring Networks (SSN) Network Operations Center will provide a tour of the live operations of networks managed by SSN, like ComEd's Advanced Metering Infrastructure. There will also be discussions around their advancements of SSN’s NIC card technology, analytics demos leveraging smart meter data including a few animations, a smart streetlight demonstration discussing the benefits of smart streetlights and what other technologies can be enabled, and other data analytics capabilities leveraging their networks. Silver Spring Networks is located in the Willis Tower, a building that held the title of World’s Tallest Building for nearly 25 years. For a tour of the Willis Tower Skydeck, including the world famous glass boxes on the "Ledge," select the tour offering on Tuesday July 18th, but note the admission for the Skydeck is $25.
